Professional Engineers

All individuals seeking Professional Engineer (PE) registration in the state of North Dakota will need to complete our application.

Please read all information prior to submitting your application.

According to North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) 43-19.1 the requirements for registering as a PE are as follows:

  1. Successful completion of a Board approved Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, this requirement cannot be waived by the Board.
  2. Registration as an Engineer Intern (EIT) in a jurisdiction, if you have not received your EIT please see our EIT application here.
  3. Successful competition of a Board approved Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam, this requirement cannot be waived by the Board.
  4. Graduation with a Baccalaureates in an Engineering, Engineering related, or an accredited (ETAC) Engineering Technology degree. All registration in North Dakota is based solely on the Baccalaureates degree.
  5. Completion of the required years of experience, all experience begins after the date of graduation with your Baccalaureate’s degree. The required years of experience are as follows:
    1. ABET Accredited Engineering Degree = 4 years of experience
    2. Non-ABET accredited Engineering Degree = 8 years of experience
    3. Engineering Technology (ETAC) or Engineering Related Degree = 12 years of experience

All applicants are required to submit the following documents with their application:

  • Completed application form
  • Your NCEES Record must be transmitted to the Board office
  • Application fee
  • Completed application form
  • Completed work experience record form.
    • If you have more than 7 work engagements an additional table can be found on form number NDPELS-PERS-04c.
  • Five references that are NOT family members or members of our Board.
    • Three reference must be registered PEs that can speak on first hand knowledge of some of your experience.
    • Two references can be character references.
  • Official copies of your transcripts
    • All foreign degrees require a credentials evaluation from NCEES.
  • Verification of exams and license
    • You can use either NCEES’s electronic verification service or our verification form.

If you meet the requirements above and wish to be registered as a PE in North Dakota you will need to submit our application below.

North Dakota offers two options in applying for your PE.

  1. Examination – for all individuals who are seeking their initial registration and do NOT hold a license in another jurisdiction.
  2. Endorsement – for all individuals seeking registration and hold a valid license in another jurisdiction.

Standard processing time for all applications is 6-8 weeks from receipt of a completed application. All applications are processed in the order they are received.
